Back in October we started to get hurricane warnings. We went back and forth a million times over what we were going to do, but eventually decided to stay home. Right after I bought a toooon of water, granola bars and flashlights the base we live on made it mandatory for us to evacuate. We decided since we had to leave anyway, we might as well make a vacation of it and decided to go all the way up to Washington, D.C. When we told our good friends (the Nelsons) about it they decided to come with us, which made our trip that much more fun.
Highlights included:
-Staying in a hotel room next-door to the nelsons. So glad to have them as friends + neighbors in Savannah.
-Visiting Arlington (my favorite place we went). Calvin asked a lot of hard-to-answer questions about dead bodies.
-Seeing the White House
-Spending our anniversary at Mt. Vernon. It was rainy that day but it ended up being such a good day touring George Washington's house and exploring the grounds.
-Having the guys babysit one night so Jaynee and I could go to the temple. It was so needed.
-Getting to go to Cafe Rio + Dallin running into one of his favorite mission companions while we were there (sooo crazy).
-Spending Calvin's 4th birthday at the National Zoo followed by Dairy Queen ice cream cake + presents in the hotel room. He loved it.
-Wandering through the museums (the air & space one being Dal and Calvin's favorite)
-Spending our last day at the WWII memorial + the Lincoln monument
-2 super nice little toddler travelers :) Seriously, both of them did awesome
Glimpse of fall (which basically doesn't exist in Savannah) |
I hope that our next hurricane is this fun!
P.S. When we came home we had to through away everything in our fridge and freezer since the power was out for 4 days. There were sooo many trees down and stores weren't stocked with anything for several days after we arrived home. Also, our drive home was super sketchy and took twice as long because of all of the flooding in N.C. We ended up getting a little lost in the dark in a scary part of the state. We kept having to turn around because entire roads were flooded and we were nervous about running out of gas because there was no power or places open. We were glad we made it!
